AIM 139 - How did communism and democracy disagree after WWII and how did democracy make life better for more people?


I.  Communism v. Democracy
A. Korean War (1950)
1. North Korea - Communist 
2. South Korea - Democracy
3. 38th parallel: division between North and South Korea; still division today

B.  Vietnam War (1950-1970)
1. North Vietnam - Communist
2. South Vietnam - Democracy 
3. 14th parallel - division between North and South Vietnam

C.  Germany (1945-1989)
1. no war in Germany; monitored/watched after WWII
2. US, England, France, and Russia each watch part of Germany
3. demilitarized zone = area of a country, monitored and watched to not have an army; prevent a war
4. US, England, and France will set up democracies in their demilitarized zones
(WEST GERMANY)
5. Russia will set up communism in their demilitarized zone (EAST GERMANY)
6. Life gets happier in West Germany because democracy allows people to make $
7. Life gets sadder in East Germany because communism has problems and shares all $

D. No war in Germany over communism and democracy

E.  Russia is mad because a lot of people try to leave the communist part of Germany for a happier life
1. build a wall to stop people from leaving
2. Berlin Wall

F.  Democracies try to help people who want to leave because:
1. it shows democracy is better than communism
2. people want to leave a communist country to move to a democracy

G. Help
1. Truman Doctrine - Democracies send TROOPS to keep people safe
2. Marshall Plan - Democracies send MONEY to help support people
