I.  Japanese Social Classes
A.  Emperor
1. top class
2. traditional leader
3. figurehead = the emperor was a leader who had respect but no authority or power

B.  Shogun
1. military leader
2. the shogun had the most power

C. Daimyo
1. rich land owners
2. military generals

D. Samurai
1. soldiers
2. soldiers followed BUSHIDO
3. BUSHIDO = strict code of loyalty and honor

E. Peasants
1. poor farmers
2. lowest social class
