AIM 149
How did imperialism change the relationship between a colony and a mother country?
I. Causes of Imperialism
A. 3Gs were the causes of imperialism; they summarize the top three reasons for imperialism
1. gold - desire to make money
2. glory - desire for power
3. god - desire to spread culture
B. Other Causes:
1. technology - new inventions made it faster and easier to travel to other places and communicate
2. national pride - nationalism increases when you become an imperialist and demonstrate power, prestige, and superiority.
3. balance of power - countries competed with each other to show they were the best
4. Social Darwinism - belief that your culture is superior to others
C. Imperialism
1. control of one country by another
2. colony = smaller and weaker country = materials and resources are taken and used
3. mother country = larger and stronger country = make things and sell them back to their colony
