Global 10: Periods 2,6,8

AIM 132: How did the plan to avoid future wars lead to the Yalta and Potsdam Agreements?

I.  World After WWII
A. WWII started because:
1. Hitler invaded Poland
2. German nationalism increased quickly
3. Japan and German became very aggression
4. Japan attacked the US at Pearl Harbor

B.  Why was this allowed to happen?
1.  After WWI, Germany was punished and blamed -> this will increase NATIONALISM because Germans are mad.
2.  After WWI, Germany built a strong army -> they wanted revenge because Germany was humiliated.

C. Why was this allowed to happen?
1. No one watched Germany to make sure they did not cause trouble
2. After WWII, superpowers realize this has to change.
3. Germany, and other WWII losers need to be WATCHED or BABYSAT to make sure they do not cause another war.
4. demilitarized zone - a place set up to make sure peace happens and war does not start.

D.  Peace at the end of WWI was discussed once at the Treaty of Versailles
1. Superpowers change this at the end of WWII
2. Superpowers discuss peace twice because they want to make sure the peace works

E. Peace Agreements to end WWII
1. Yalta Agreement - Superpowers agree they will babysit and watch Germany to make sure Germany does not start another world war

2. Potsdam Agreement - Superpowers sign their plan and begin to set it up.
